How to prevent hair breakage, and what to do when it starts

Long, smooth brown hair in the white salon chair

Hair breakage is hair snapping along the length, not falling out from the root, and you stop it by finding the cause (heat, lightening, rough handling, sleep), protecting the hair and repairing what has already weakened. At kruLA cold hair recovery restores strength and moisture without straightening.

kruLA does cold hair recovery and deep conditioning in Century City for $150 to $300, by hair length: call (949) 883-8301.

What is hair breakage, and what does it look like?

Breakage is a strand snapping partway along its length, so you see short pieces of different lengths, a ragged hairline and ends that never get longer. Shedding is different: a shed hair is whole and has a small bulb at the root.

The diagnosis guide explains how to tell breakage from shedding. Hair loss is a medical question and belongs with a doctor.

What causes hair breakage?

Breakage comes from hair that is dry, weakened or pulled too hard, and the usual causes pile up on the same hair.

Can sleeping break your hair?

Yes, it can: tossing and turning rubs the hair against the pillow, and rough cotton drags at the strands, which does the most harm to hair that is already fragile.

A silk or satin pillowcase or bonnet lets the hair slide instead of catching, and a loose braid or a soft tie keeps the lengths from tangling overnight. The point is less friction, not a special product.

Is it bad to sleep with wet hair?

It is harder on the hair than sleeping with dry hair, because wet hair is at its weakest and stretches and snaps more easily when it rubs on the pillow.

Let it dry most of the way before bed, or sleep with it in a loose braid on a smooth pillowcase.

How do I stop hair breakage day to day?

Lower the heat, brush gently from the ends up, never yank wet hair, keep conditioner in the routine and let tight styles go.

A heat protectant before any hot tool helps, and so does dusting the ends before the splits climb the strand. See split ends and hair dusting.

How do I fix hair that is already breaking?

Take off the ends that have split, then restore moisture and strength; hair that breaks needs strengthening and often a trim, not only conditioning.

At kruLA hair dusting removes only the split ends, cold hair recovery restores moisture and strength without straightening and reconstruction repairs and smooths severely damaged hair. Hair that has been lightened and snaps needs repair first, before any smoothing.

Why does broken hair seem to stop growing?

Hair keeps growing from the root, and broken hair seems stuck because the ends snap off about as fast as the roots add length.

Stopping the breakage is what lets the length show. The guide on how to grow long hair is about keeping the length you grow.

What drives the price of repairing hair breakage? Hair length and thickness set the price: at kruLA hair dusting is $120, cold hair recovery is $150 to $300 and reconstruction is $270 to $650, and thick hair adds $30 to $90.

Every length step is on the prices page, and the consultation is $0 for 20 min.

Hair breakage FAQ

Does a silk pillowcase help hair?

It can: silk and satin let the hair slide instead of catching, so there is less friction and less snapping, above all on fragile hair. It does not repair hair that is already damaged. kruLA does not sell pillowcases.

Is a silk bonnet better than a pillowcase?

Both cut friction. A bonnet stays on the hair all night, and a pillowcase is simpler if you do not like wearing one. A loose braid helps with either, so choose whichever you will use.

Do tight ponytails cause breakage?

Yes, if they are tight or in the same place every day: the strand snaps where the tie pulls, often around the hairline. Use soft ties, move the spot and let the hair down at night.

Can brushing wet hair cause breakage?

Yes: wet hair stretches and snaps easily. Detangle from the ends up with a wide-tooth comb, and put conditioner or a leave-in on first.

Does heat styling cause breakage?

It can: high heat dries the strand and weakens it, so it snaps where it bends. Use a heat protectant, lower the temperature and skip daily hot tools.

Is breakage the same as split ends?

No: a split end is a strand fraying at the tip, and breakage is a strand snapping along its length. They often go together. A split can only be cut off; hair dusting ($120) removes the splits and keeps the length.

Can hair breakage be repaired?

The hair can be made stronger, softer and smoother, and pieces that have snapped do not grow back on the same strand. New hair grows in from the root. A repair treatment and a trim of the weakest ends are the way, and the consultation ($0) shows which.

Which salon treatment helps hair that is breaking?

Cold Hair Recovery ($150 to $300) restores moisture and strength without straightening, and reconstruction ($270 to $650) repairs severely damaged hair and smooths it. Hair dusting ($120) takes off the splits. The consultation ($0, 20 min) says which fits.
